Before Google Earth there was WorldWind and Keyhole (the company that created the application used to develop Google Earth). Before Keyole, there was the movie Powers of Ten (dir. Charles and Ray Eames 1977). Indeed, one of the co-founders of Keyole – Avi Bar-Zeev – recognized the inspirational dimension of Power of Tens in the development of the Keyhole application (see the interview of Avi Bar-Zeev by Jeremy Crampton in Cartographica in 2008). But before Powers of Ten there was Casablanca (dir. Michael Curtiz, 1942). The very first scene of the movie is a cartographic montage that predates several of the zooming capabilities developed more than sixty years later in virtual globes.

Avant Google Earth il y avait WorldWind et Keyhole (la compagnie qui a créé l’application utilisée pour développer Google Earth). Avant Keyhole il y avait le film Powers of Ten (dir. Charles and Ray Eames 1977), puisque l’un des co-fondateurs de Keyole – Avi Bar-Zeev – a reconnu que ce film avait servi de source d’inspiration pour le développement de l’application Keyhole (Voir l’interview accordé par Avi Bar-Zeev à Jeremy Crampton dans Cartographica 2008). Mais avant Powers of Ten il y avait Casablanca (Michael Curtiz, 1942). La première scène de ce film est en effet un montage cartographique qui anticipe la plupart des fonctions de zoom désormais disponibles dans les globes virtuels.

These zooming capabilities are:

• The combination of the spinning globe with a zoom effect on a specific point: Paris;
• The use of a “jump” effect similar as the one currently available in Google Earth to move from one place (Paris) to another (Casablanca);
• The perspective changes from the vertical view (God-eye view) to an oblique perspective of the streets of Casablanca. This last capability resonates with the recent development of street views functionalities.

In other words, in 1942 most of the zooming capabilities of contemporary virtual globes had already been anticipated by cinema.

Ces fonctions de zoom incluent:

• La rotation du globe associée à un zoom sur un lieu spécifique: Paris;
• L’effet de « saut » similaire à celui developpé dans Google Earth pour naviguer d’un lieu (Paris) à un autre (Casablanca);
• Le passage d’une perspective verticale sur la carte à une perspective horizontale dans les rues de Casablanca qui n’est pas sans rappeler les fonctionnalités de Google Street View.

Bref, dès 1942 les principales functionnalités de zooms disponibles dans les globes virtuels contemporains avaient été anticipées dans Casablanca.
