According to wikipedia the GPS concept was born in 1963: « Project 57 was worked in 1963 and it was « in this study that the GPS concept was born. » » The following year James Bond was already following the car of the villain Goldfinger in real-time on a screen map in his Aston Martin through Europe and in the US (Goldfinger, dir. Guy Hamilton 1964). In fact, 007 had cheated a bit by installing a transmitter in the trunk of Golfinger’s car. Nevertheless, even if the technique used by JB was slightly different than the one used for the GPS, the result for the end user is very similar. Since « the real synthesis that became GPS was created » only in 1973 (still according to Wikipedia), this cinematic map could be considered as a precursor of the GPS navigating system that are now part of our daily life.

Guy Hamilton 1964). Bon d’accord, 007 avait un peu triché en installant un transmetteur dans le coffre de la voiture Goldfinger. Néanmoins, même si la technique utilisée par l’agent 007 diffère quelque peu de celle du GPS, le résultat pour l’utilisateur s’en rapproche largement. Étant donné que la vraie synthèse qui a débouchée sur le GPS n’a été créée qu’en 1973 (toujours d’après Wikipedia) cette carte cinématique peut être considérée comme le précurseur des systèmes de navigations GPS que l’on utilise désormais quotidiennement, et James Bond comme le premier utilisateur de ce système.
