24 is certainly one of the most original and most influential TV  series in recent years. It is also one of those with Alias that  systematically use geospatial tools  for telling stories.

24 (24 heures chrono en France) est certainement une des séries télévisées les plus originales et les plus marquantes de ces dernières années. C’est aussi l’une de celles, avec Alias, qui a le plus systématiquement intégré les outils de la géonumérisation dans les scénarios.

In order to thwart the evil machinations hatched by Machiavellian foreigners aided by traitors more dangerous one than the other, Jack Bauer, the valiant and unhappy agent of CTU (Counter Terrorist Unit), combines varied geospatial techniques : GPS  navigation software , Geographical Information Systems, spatial analysis tools,  satellite images and maps on PDA device … The importance of geospatial information tools in ’24’ is obvious. It can be easily explained by the real time narrative technique used in the TV series. Because of time constraints, places and distance between places become crucial. Jack Bauer and other CTU agents or enemies struggle all day against space and geospatial technologies appear to be one response to this problem. You can find  here a systematic inventory of uses of geospatial tools in the series.

In this article,  I try to present a socio-cultural analysis of the role of this technologies in 24. All this stuff is only in French for the moment but  You can use the google translating function proposed on the site to get a sort of English version.

Pour faire échouer les sombres machinations ourdies par des étrangers machiavéliques aidés de traîtres plus dangereux les uns que les autres, Jack Bauer, le valeureux et malheureux agent de la CTU (Counter Terrorist Unit), combine les techniques géonumériques les plus variées : navigation par GPS, Systèmes d’Information Géographique, analyse spatiale, consultation d’images et de cartes à distance sur PDA… Les personnages sont dans une perpétuelle lutte contre la montre.  Le temps est en effet toujours compté, à cause du principe même de la narration en temps réel, marque de fabrique de la série.

J’ai commencé ici un début d’inventaire systématique de l’utilisation des outils géonumériques dans la série et là une première analyse sociale et culturelle du rôle de ces analyses dans 24.
