Sam's map / La carte de Sam

The Monster club is a 1980 horror movie directed by Roy Ward Baker. Eramus (Vincent Price) is a vampire. He approaches  Ronald Chetwyn-Hayes (a real horror writer) who let him drink a little of his blood. In gratitude, the vampire invites his victim to the Monster club where he tells him 3 stories. A spatial machinery appears in the 3rd story.

Le Club des monstres est un film d’horreur réalisé en 1980 par Roy Ward Baker. Ronald Chetwyn-Hayes (personnage réel, auteur de romans d’horreur) joué par John Carradine est approché par le vampire Eramus (Vincent Price), qui boit un peu de son sang. Pour le remercier, ce dernier l’invite à son « Club des monstres ». Sur place il lui raconte 3 histoires, dont la dernière fait intervenir un dispositif spatial.

Sam (Stuart Whitman), a horror movies director, is looking for a village that will serve as a set for his next movie. His assistant shows him on a map where he prospected (63rd minute). Sam focuses on an isolated area. He takes the map in order to  find the ideal village during the weekend. Driving his Porsche, he uses the map, in addition to a road sign (which shows the  directions to  Hillington,  Banting et Redwell) (64th minute). Finally, he finds a village called Loughville near Hillington.

We found no village called Loughville in the UK … There is a Hillington, in Norfolk County, but no Banting or Redwell.  And there is no M 100 Motorway, Bluehouse Hill or Themstead road near Hillington either… By looking carefully to the map, we can notice it is falsified. The references to Hillington and Banting were added on another map representing a different location: the south-west of St Albans, a thirty miles north of London… There is  other modifications, that can be spotted by the intensity of black and the font difference. M 100 Motorway is in fact M 10 Motorway , A4140 is in fact A4147.

Sam (Stuart Whitman), réalisateur de films d’horreur, est à la recherche d’un village devant servir de décor pour son prochain film. Son assistant lui indique sur une carte les endroit où il a prospecté (63ième minute). Sam focalise sur une zone plus isolée. Il emporte la carte avec lui avec la ferme intention de trouver le village idéal au cours du week-end. Au volant de sa Porche, il utilise la carte pour se diriger, en complément de la signalisation routière (indiquant Hillington,  Banting et Redwell) (64ème minute). Il finit par trouver un village du nom de Loughville près de Hillington.

On ne trouve nulle trace de village du nom de Loughville au Royaume-Uni sur le web… Il y bien un Hillington dans le Comté de Norfolk, mais aucun Banting ou Redwell n’en semble proche. et encore moins de M 100 Motarway ou de Bluehouse Hill… En cherchant bien, on s’aperçoit que la carte telle qu’elle est présentée est falsifiée et que les mentions Hillington et Banting ont été ajoutées sur une carte représentant un tout autre endroit : le sud-ouest de St Albans, à une trentaine de kilomètres au nord de Londres… On remarque d’autres modifications, repérables par l’intensité du noir et la police de caractère qui diffère des indications d’origine. La M 100 Motorway est en fait la M 10 Motorway , l’A4140 est en fait l’A4147.
