A Self-Made Hero was directed by Jacques Audiard in 1996 from Jean-François Deniau’s book. It won the best screenplay award from Cannes Film Festival.

In France at the end of World War II, Albert Dehousse (played by Mathieu Kassovitz)  invents gradually a brilliant and glorious life for himself. To imagine for himself a past of French Resistance hero, he scrutinize all the newspapers of the time , penetrates slowly the networks of old resistance fighters and build a personal journey made of numerous incidents collected from their stories.

For this purpose, he learns by heart the London underground map. At the 56th minute of the movie, we see him memorizing the Northern Line from Edgware Station to Camden Town and then reciting blindly the itinerary and the station changes in order to make a point. The topological model (different than an euclidean traditional based map) facilitates the memorization of the routes. The use of the  map is not that important in the movie but, like the newspaper articles, the books or the archives, its adds reality to the anecdote and makes them credible. He is finally appointed “lieutenant-colonel” for his action in the Resistance and goes to Baden-Baden with the French troops of occupation.

En France, à la fin de la 2^ème Guerre Mondiale, Albert Dehousse (interprété par Mathieu Kassovitz) s’invente petit à petit une vie brillante et glorieuse. Pour s’imaginer un passé héroïque de résistant, il épluche toute la presse de l’époque, s’introduit progressivement dans les réseaux d’anciens résistants et se construit un parcours alimenté par les multiples anecdotes recueillies.

C’est ainsi qu’il apprend par cœur la carte du métro londonien. A la 56^ème minute du film, on le voit mémoriser la ligne « Northern » de la station Edgware à Camden Town puis réciter à l’aveugle l’itinéraire et les changements de stations pour appuyer son propos. La représentation non euclidienne mais topologique du métro facilite la mémorisation des parcours. L’apparition de la carte est furtive mais au même titre que les articles de journaux, les livres, ou les archives elle vient alimenter ses anecdotes pour les rendre réalistes. Il est finalement nommé lieutenant-colonel au titre de ses faits de résistance et ira à Baden-Baden avec les troupes françaises d’occupation
