L’Atoll de Pom Pom Galli

La Classe américaine (American Class) also known as  Le Grand Détournement is a 1993 French television film directed by Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist) and Dominique Mézerette. It is exclusively made of excerpts of old Warner’s movies (plus one extract of the French TV series Maigret). All of them are combined and dubbed with new lines. The result is an entirely new parodic and funny movie. The first détournement in the movie is … a map.

La Classe américaine : Le Grand Détournement (1993) est un téléfilm français de Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist) et Dominique Mézerette diffusé sur Canal+. Il est composé d’extraits de films de Warner Bros réalisés entre 1952 et 1980, avec un soupçon de la série télévisée Maigret (un seul extrait). Les doublages farfelus et un montage déjanté en font un film entièrement nouveau. Et le tout premier détournement du film… est une carte.

The movie begins with a first détournement to localize the action. The extract comes from the movie The Sea Chase (1955 ) directed by John Farrow and starring the Great George Abitbol (John Wayne bien sûr). The screen shows  a mid-Pacific’s map. The camera zooms in to the Pom Pom Galli Atoll (« fictional place »). In the same time, a voice-over said: « Entre l’Australia et la South America, dans l’Ocean South Pacific, l’atoll de Pom Pom Galli… » which means « Between Australia and South America, in the Ocean South Pacific, Pom Pom Galli’s atoll ». The movie is dubbed into French, but the images come from American movies and the map is in English… Words on the map are pronounced like they were French words…: th becomes t, Australia and America remain Australia and America!…

Le téléfilm commence par un détournement permettant de localiser l’action. L’extrait est tiré du film The Sea Chase / Le renard des océans (1955) de John Farrow avec le grand George Abitbol himself (John Wayne off course). Il s’agit d’une carte de l’Océan Pacifique. Alors que la caméra zoome depuis une vue générale de la carte sur un atoll, une voix off égraine la phrase suivante « Entre l’Australia et la South America, dans l’Ocean South Pacific, l’atoll de Pom Pom Galli… » . Les doublages sont en français, mais les images sont extraites de films américains et la carte est en anglais. Le tout est prononcé à la française (les th devenant des t, l’Australia et l’America restant l’Australia et l’America !). L’atoll de Pom Pom Galli est un lieu fictionnel.
