Carl Ritter, along with Alexander von Humboldt, was one of the founders of a modern, independent, and more scientific geography in the 19th century, with better-defined objectives and methods. The great French geographer Elysée Reclus, who promoted a new discipline called spherography in 1898, came to Berlin to attend his lectures. For this pioneer of scientific geography, we can see in this quote that the globe is an object that appeals as much to the imagination as it does to geographical reflection:

Let us examine a globe. However large it may be, it can only appear to us as a miniaturization and an imperfect representation of the external model of our planet. Nevertheless, its perfect roundness, which conceals so much diversity, has a profound influence on our imagination and our minds. What strikes us when we look at a globe is the arbitrariness that governs the distribution of land and water.

    • Merci Sylvain pour cette remarque et le lien vers ces ressources. Oui, la dimension éducative des globes est une vieille histoire, dont la fiction s’est souvent fait l’écho. On y reviendra dans d’autres billets.
