While the planet Earth is being devastated by an ecological disaster, a team of researchers is cultivating forests and numerous plant species aboard the Valley Forge spacecraft. However, when they are ordered to destroy the crops and return to Earth, botanist Freeman refuses and decides to remain alone in his greenhouses, accompanied by three robot assistants.

Set to the music of Joan Baez, this poetic and sombre film left a lasting impression. Released in the United States in 1972 and in France in 1975 under the title Et la Terre survivra, it is one of the first ecological science fiction films. Notably influencing George Lucas, who was inspired by the robot assistants to design R2-D2 for his Star Wars trilogy, it was the first feature film by the creator of the special effects for 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Spherical shapes are omnipresent throughout the film, from the ship’s portholes and the domes of the greenhouses to artificial food, billiard balls, the game table, artificial light bulbs and the badges on the astronauts’ suits. The globe itself only appears once, in the middle of the film. As the ship approaches Saturn in a dangerous manner, Freeman scans the galaxy through his telescope and finds the planet Earth. The image is rough, and it was in fact only a few months after the film’s release that the famous photograph of Earth seen from space, known as the Blue Marble, was taken during the Apollo 17 mission.
