Duane Hanson ( 1925-1996 ) is an American sculptor known for the realistic and life-sized works of people he created with various materials (polyester resin, fiberglass, bronze, Bondo). Duane Hanson (1925-1996) est un artiste américain, sculpteur connu pour ses œuvres réalistes grandeur nature de personnes, représentés à l’aide de matériaux divers (résine de polyester, fibre de verre, bronze, Bondo). Son travail est souvent associé au courant de l’hyperréalisme et au mouvement Pop Art. L’une de ces œuvres, Les touristes, représente un couple de touristes, caricatures du stéréotype des touristes américains. This work is exhibited at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, which is included in the National Galleries of Scotland.

The plan seems to be differently staged depending on the exhibitions. For example, we can see the first words of the title ( » Treasure land « …) on the illustration of the Companion guide to the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.  This title does not appear in the showroom (July 19th, 2010 )… Regrettably, photographs are forbidden in these art galleries… But by getting closer and by observing with attention,  we can note some information…

On the descriptive part of the guide it is possible to read :  Six gun territory, Lake county, Leesburg. On the map, there is a legend, or rather a list : Lake Placid, Sebring, Avon Park. The map is blue (legends and layout) with a white background. We note some pictograms. Some names are highlighted with orange. We note some names too: Punta Gorda, Palmdale, Lake Placid, Fort Pierce, Modre Ayem (?… difficult to read !). All these places are in Florida, great tourist region, and Hanson’s adopted State.

Cette œuvre est exposée à la Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, qui fait partie des National Galleries of Scotland.

Le plan semble être mis en scène différemment selon les expositions. Par exemple, sur l’illustration du Companion guide to the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, on aperçoit le début du titre « Treasure land »…  Cela n’apparait pas dans la salle d’exposition (le 19 juillet 2010)… Malheureusement, les photographies y sont interdites… Mais en se contorsionnant au-dessus du sac, on note un certain nombre d’informations, en tout cas sur ce qui est donné à voir…

Sur la partie descriptive du guide, sont mentionnés Six gun territory, Lake county, Leesburg. Côté plan, on trouve une légende, ou plutôt une liste : Lake Placid, Sebring, Avon Park. Le plan en lui même est bleu (légendes et tracés) sur fond blanc, certains textes surlignés en orange. On y trouve des pictogrammes. Le plan porte des noms parmi lesquels Punta Gorda, Palmdale, Lake Placid, Fort Pierce, Modre Ayem (? Difficile à lire !). Tous ces lieux sont situés en Floride, région touristique par excellence, et terre d’adoption de Duane Hanson.
