Le Parrain,: 3e partie est un film réalisé par Francis Ford Coppola, sorti en 1990. Michael Corleone, parrain du Clan Corleone, souhaite prendre ses distances avec la Mafia et se concentrer sur des affaires légales. Pour se faire, il se rapproche de l’Église.

The Godfather: Part III is a 1990 film directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Michael Corleone, a Mafia kingpin, aims to distance himself from the Mafia and to concentrate on legal businesses. In order to do so, he approaches the Roman Catholic Church.

A la 40eme minute, Michael Corleone rencontre l’archevêque Gilday, directeur de la Banque du Vatican, qui a accumulé un énorme déficit. Ce rendez-vous se tient dans une pièce sur les murs de laquelle sont peints de magnifiques cartes (mappemondes).

Il est intéressant de noter que ce rendez-vous est censé se passer à la Cathédrale Saint-Patrick de New York puisque la scène est précédée d’un plan de coupe montrant sa façade… Pourtant, nulle salle de ce type dans l’édifice… En fait, cette pièce est la salle de la Mappemonde (Sala del Mappamondo) de la Villa Farnèse de Caprarola, dans la province de Viterbe, dans le Latium en Italie. Le décor de cette salle est l’œuvre de Giovanni Antonio da Varese, dit le Venosino, avec l’aide de Raffaellino da Reggio et de Giovanni De Vecchi.

Mais il faut également noter que l’on retrouve cette même salle, lors d’une réunion censé se passer… au Vatican (50e minute), un autre plan de coupe, additionné d’un texte en surimpression (« Vatican city, Rome »), l’attestant là encore (50°).

Coppola transporte donc la Sala del Mappamondo de Caprarola à Manhattan, puis au Vatican, illustrant parfaitement comment la distorsion de l’espace est souvent utilisée dans la fiction.

In the 40th minute, Michael Corleone meets Archbishop Gilday, head of the Vatican Bank, who accumulates a huge deficit. This meeting takes place in a room on the walls of which are painted magnificent maps.

It is interesting to note that this meeting is supposed to take place in St. Patrick’s Cathedral (Manhattan).

Meeting at the Vatican / Réunion au Vatican

Indeed, cutaway shot. Nevertheless, no similar room in the building… In fact, this room is the Room of Maps (Sala del Mappamondo) in the Villa Farnese at Caprarola, both in Rome, Italy. The decoration of this room is the woks of Giovanni Antonioda Varese, alias Venosino, with help of Raffaellino da Reggio and Giovanni De Vecchi.

Note this room appears a second time, for another meeting which supposed to take place at… the Vatican (50th minute). Here too, a cutaway shot, with a superimposed text (« Vatican city, Rome »), prouves it.

So, Coppola transports the Sala del Mappamondo from Caprarola to Manhattan, then to the Vatican and he illustrates perfectly how space distortion is frequently used in fiction.
