Military map /Carte des militaires

In 2005, almost 30 years after Dawn of the dead (see this post) second part of his « Dead series », George Romero directed a fourth movie Land of the dead. No paper maps here … Time has passed and computers and GPS are now available.

En 2005, presque 30 ans après avoir réalisé Zombie (voir ce billet), deuxième volet de sa « Saga des zombies », Georges Romero en réalisait un 4ème épisode : Land of the dead. Pas de plan ou de carte papier ici… Le laps de temps séparant ces deux films a permis l’apparition des ordinateurs et des GPS.

The human have folded down in  Downtown Pittsburgh,the  « golden triangle » carved by the confluence of the Allegheny River and Monongahela River where  the Ohio River forms. They have organized their military protection. The troops have computers and a screen display a downtown Pittsburgh’s map.

The map is also visible in « Dead Reckoning », a reinforced armored truck whose function is to supply the community during raids in neighboring cities abandoned to the living deads. In the truck, this map also serves to guide missiles.

Another device used by Romero is GPS tracking. When « Dead Reckoning » is stolen, the main hero Riley (Simon Baker), designer of the truck, is able to locate it and anticipate its destination with a chip stuck to the truck and a GPS device, and he manages to intercept it.

Repliés dans le centre ville de Pittsburgh, le « triangle d’or » à la confluence de l’Allegheny River et de la Monongahela River pour former l’Ohio, les humains ont organisé leur protection militaire. Afin d’organiser cette dernière, les troupes disposent d’ordinateurs sur lesquels il est possible de visualiser le centre ville de Pittsburgh.

Cette même carte est également visible dans l' »Éclaireur de la mort », camion blindé et surarmé dont la fonction est le ravitaillement de la communauté lors de raids dans les villes voisines abandonnées aux morts vivants. Dans le camion, elle sert également au guidage des missiles.

Autre dispositif utilisé par Romero, le tracking GPS. Lorsque le camion est dérobé, le héros Riley (Simon Baker), concepteur de l’engin, est en mesure de le localiser et d’anticiper sa destination grâce à une puce (sur le camion) et un récepteur GPS. Il parvient ainsi  l’intercepter.
