The stairs in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art are very famous as the training ground of  Rocky Balboa, in the 1976 movie Rocky, directed by John G. Avildsen. The stairs appear successively in Rocky II (directed by Sylverster Stallone in 1979), Rocky III (Sylverster Stallone, 1985), Rocky V (John G. Avildsen, 1990) and Rocky Balboa (Sylverster Stallone, 2006). The stairs could be considered as a materialization of the fiction as some people call it now Rocky Steps but we will focus on the bronze statue of Rocky, work of the American artist A. Thomas Schomberg, that Stallone offered to the city in 1982.

Devant le Philadelphia Museum of Art se dresse un escalier rendu célèbre comme terrain d’entraînement, de Rocky Balboa, dans le film Rocky de John G. Avildsen, sorti en 1976. Cet escalier apparait successivement dans Rocky II (Sylverster Stallone, 1976), Rocky III (Sylverster Stallone, 1985) , Rocky V (John G. Avildsen, 1990) et Rocky Balboa (Sylverster Stallone, 2006). L’escalier pourrait être considéré comme une matérialisation de la fiction puisque certains l’appellent maintenant le Rocky Steps. It represents Rocky in battle dress and raising his fists.  This 3 tons weight and 10 feet tall statue was installed at the top of the stairs for the shooting of Rocky III, before it was offered to the City. Unfortunately, it proved to be  an awkward present since the authorities of the museum questioned the artistic value of the statue. Work without artistic value for some, cultural icon for the others, it has been exhibited for a long time at the front of the Spectrum (Arena) of Philadelphia, where the fight between Rocky and Apollo Creed takes place in the movie. It got back temporarily to its original place during some movies shooting: Rocky V,  Mannequin, Philadelphia. Stocked in the Museum’s reserves since 2002, it find its definitive (?) place in 2006, at the bottom right of the steps. Note that the debate remains underlying…

At the top of the stairs, the statue was replaced with a simple set of Rocky footprints for  marking the original place of the statue.

It seems to be 2 original copies of this statue:

• The first one seems be housed at the San Diego Hall of Champions Museum.
• The International Institute for Sport and Olympic History at State College (IISOH) could have acquired the second in 2010. First, it was listed on eBay at various times in 2003-2005, for raise funds for the IISOH, with a starting bid of $5 million, then later at $3 million, then later at $1 million … without success.

On the IISOH website, we can read the institute own the rights of both the Rocky statues … This point need to be confirmed.

But Rocky does not materialize only in Philadelphia. There is indeed another statue of Rocky in Serbia in the center of Žitište, a village located 55 kilometers north from Belgrade. This work by a Croatian artist was intended to revitalize the village, that suffered numerous ordeals.

Another statue of Rocky is observed in 2007, around the Avispa Fukuoka‘s stadium, a Japanese soccer club, during a tournament sponsored by the production of Rocky Balboa (the movie !). But we do not know where it comes from, if it stayed there, or where is its current location … All information about it would be welcome.

Finally, let us go back to the top of Rocky steps…  where we find numerous (but temporaries) living local materializations of fiction, works of many people, Rocky’s fans … or not, who come for replay the famous scene when Rocky runs to the top of the steps, turns back and raises his arms in sign of victory. La statue représente Rocky en tenue de combat, les poings levés. Elle pèse 3 tonnes et mesure 3 mètres de haut. Elle a d’abord servi lors du tournage de Rocky III, installée en haut des marches, avant d’être offerte à la ville. Malheureusement, elle s’est transformée en cadeau embarrassant, la valeur artistique de l’œuvre étant remise en cause par les autorités du musée. Œuvre artistique secondaire pour les uns, icône culturelle pour les autres, elle a longtemps été exposée devant la Spectrum Arena de Philadelphie, où a lieu le combat entre Rocky et Apollo Creed dans le film. Elle a réintégré temporairement sa place originelle le temps des tournages de quelques films (Rocky V, Mannequin, Philadelphia). Consignée à partir de 2002 dans les réserves du Musée, elle a trouvé sa place définitive (?) en 2006, en bas à droite des escaliers.  Mais la polémique reste sous-jacente…

En haut des marches, une plaque de bronze est incrustée dans le sol, représentant l’empreinte des chaussures de Rocky qui marque l’emplacement originel de la statue.

Il semble exister 2 autres exemplaires originaux de cette statue :

• La première semble être hébergée au San Degio Hall of Champions Museum.
• La seconde devait être acquise par le International Institute for Sport and Olympic History at State College (IISOH) en 2010. Dans un premier temps, elle avait été mise en vente à de nombreuses reprises sur ebay pour recueillir des fonds pour l’IISOH… 5 millions de dollars, puis 3, puis 1… Sans succès a priori.

Sur le site web de l’IISOH, on peut lire que l’institut possède les droits sur chacune de ces deux statues…  Ces derniers points nécessiteraient plus d’informations.

Mais Rocky ne se matérialise pas qu’à Philadelphie. Il existe en effet une autre statue de Rocky… en Serbie… au centre du Village de Žitište, à 55 kilomètres au nord de Belgrade. Oeuvre d’un artiste croate, elle avait pour but de redynamiser le village, après de nombeuses épreuves.

Il semble également qu’une autre statue de Rocky ait été observée en 2007 aux abords du stade de Avispa Fukuoka, un club japonais de football, pendant un tournoi sponsorisé par la production de Rocky Balboa (le film !). Mais nous ne savons pas d’où elle provient exactement, si elle est restée en place, ou sinon, sa localisation actuelle… Toute information à ce sujet sera la bienvenue.

Pour finir, revenons tout de même en haut des Rocky steps… Ils sont en effet le lieu de nombreuses (mais temporaires) matérialisations, vivantes cette fois, de la fiction, au gré du passage des visiteurs, fans ou non de Rocky, qui rejouent la célèbre scène où Rocky monte en courant l’escalier puis, arrivé en haut, se retourne et lève les bras en signe de victoire… (voir la vidéo ci-dessus)
