Superman Statue / La statue de Superman, Metropolis, Illinois (2006)

Rocky, Yoda or The Little Prince are not the only fictional characters who have been materialized. Superman and Lois Lane have also their own materialization. Even if Metropolis, the  city where Superman lives is fictional, a city in Illinois has the same name and beyond this resemblance, the city host… Superman and Lois Lane!

Rocky, Yoda ou le Petit Prince ne sont pas les seuls personnages fictionnels à se matérialiser dans l’espace. En effet, Superman, et Lois Lane disposent de leur propre matérialisation. En effet, si Metropolis est la ville imaginaire où prennent place les aventures du super-héros Superman, une ville de l’Illinois, aux États Unis d’Amérique, porte également ce nom. Outre ce dernier, elles n’ont pas grand chose en commun… si ce n’est que toutes deux hébergent… Superman et Lois Lane !

Metropolis is the Superman’s playground since 1939, one year later that the superhero was born from the imagination of Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel. The authors saw Metroplis as a huge city very similar to New York City. But, in 1972, DC Comics, publisher of Superman, declared the town of Metropolis (Illinois) as home town of Superman and the State of the IIlinois adopted a resolution (number 572) in the same way!

Now, every year since 1978, Metropolis celebrates Superman. And for the 15th edition,  in 1993, a statue in its glory was erected: fifteen foot, four thousand pound of bronze… and  projectile-proof ! With the mention: « TRUTH – JUSTICE – THE AMERICAN WAY. »

In fact, it replaces a first seven-foot tall color fiberglass statue, but with some holes… Indeed, it had become a target for people curious to see if Superman could really withstand bullets.

The Noel Neill – Lois Lane Statue / La statue de Noel Neill – Lois Lane

Finally, Supeman is not alone anymore since 2009. A life-size bronze statue of Noel Neill as « Lois Lane » was also placed in Metropolis, Illinois. Noel Neill Noel is famous for her interpretation of Lois Lane in the movie serials Superman (1948) and Atom Man vs Superman (1950) and the TV serial Les aventures de Superman (1952-1958).

Tout droit sorti en 1938 de l’imagination de Joe Shuster et Jerry Siegel, Superman se voit attribuer Metropolis comme terrain de jeu dès 1939 par ces créateurs. Ces derniers voyaient en Metroplis une grand ville très ressemblante de New York City. Mais en 1972, DC Comics, éditeur de Superman, a déclaré Metropolis (dans l’Illinois) ville natale de Superman, amenant même dans la foulée l’état de l’IIlinois à adopter une résolution (la numéro 572) dans ce sens !

A présent, chaque année depuis 1978, Metropolis célèbre son super-héros. Et c’est à l’occasion de la 15e édition de ces festivités, en 1993 donc, que fut érigée une statue à sa gloire. Et pas n’importe quelle statue : 4,5 m de haut, 1,8 tonne de bronze résistant aux projectiles !… Elle porte la mention :  TRUTH – JUSTICE – THE AMERICAN WAY (Vérité – Justice – la voie américaine).

En fait, cette statue en a remplacé une autre d’un peu plus de 2 mètres de haut, érigée en 1986, en fibre de verre  mais… perforée, car  cible de curieux souhaitant vérifier si Superman pouvait effectivement résister aux balles d’armes à feu, ce qui s’était avéré faux, tout du moins pour la statue !

De plus, depuis 2009, Superman n’est plus seul à Metropolis (Il). Une statue grandeur nature de Noel Neill figurant Lois Lane l’a rejointe, à quelques pâtés de maisons. Noel Neill est connue notamment pour son interprétation de Lois Lane dans les serials Superman (1948) et Atom Man contre Superman (1950) et dans la série télévisée Les aventures de Superman (1952-1958).
