A part of the « Miniature Longue March » – National Gallery in Prague / Une partie de la « Miniature Longue March » – Galerie nationale de Prague

On (e)space and fiction we already have written about tattoos (Prison Break, Waterworld). But we present here a non fictional example.  The Long March  was a military retreat undertaken by the Red Army of the Communist Party of China to escape Tchang Kaï-chek’s Kuomintang army, during the Chinese Civil war. From 2002 to 2005, 250 Chinese  and internal artists conducted a project to repeat this Long March. Qin Ga, a young Chinese artist, pushed the project much further.

Si (e)space & fiction a déjà abordé la question des tatouages (Prison Break, Waterworld), c’en est un usage moins fictionnel qui est présenté ici. De 2002 à 2005, 250 artistes chinois (et internationaux) se sont lancés dans un projet artistique consistant à refaire La longue Marche, nom donné au long  périple, mené par l’Armée rouge chinoise et une partie de l’appareil du Parti communiste chinois pour échapper à l’Armée nationale révolutionnaire du Kuomintang de Tchang Kaï-chek durant la Guerre civile chinoise. Qin Ga, jeune artiste chinois, a poussé le projet plus loin encore.

Indeed, Qin Ga had a map of China tattooed on his back. At every stage of the journey, he had the location of the city and its name add.  He now carries on his back, in an indelible way, the route of this Long March. Three photographs of his back, at three different stages, are shown in the national Gallery in Prague, under the title of The Miniature Long March.

En effet, Qin Ga s’est fait tatouer sur le dos une carte de la Chine et, à chaque étape du périple, a fait ajouter sur la carte la ville et le nom de cette dernière. Il porte à présent, de manière indélébile,  l’itinéraire de cette Longue Marche. Trois photographies de son dos, à trois étapes différentes du périple, sont visibles à la Galerie nationale à Prague sous le titre de The Miniature Long March.
