A novelty in (e)space & fiction, the reference to a map in a film not yet released and not even shot! If you were in August nearby the campus of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, you could attend the first rehearsal of the shooting of the film Tomorrowland, whose release is scheduled for late 2014. It is a Sci-fi movie produced by Disney, written by Damon Lindelof (Lost) and directed by Brad Bird (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, The Incredibles and Ratatouille). The cast includes George Clooney and Hugh Laurie. The plot of the film, originally titled 1952, stayed secret for a long time. An active teasing campaign, this post is therefore participating at, is progressively disclosing some elements. According to what is written here, it is based on the discovery of a parallel world by a child of 11 years old at the New York International Fair in 1964. This discovery should lead the kid to revisit this world as an adult to save the real world, program that seems to be assigned to one in three American blockbusters.

Une nouveauté dans (e)space & fiction, la référence à une carte présente dans un film pas encore sorti ni même tourné ! Début août sur le campus de l’Université de British Columbia à Vancouver, on pouvait assister aux premières répétitions du tournage du film Tomorrowland, dont la sortie est prévue fin 2014. Il s’agit d’un film de science-fiction produit par Disney, écrit par Damon Lindelof (Lost) et réalisé par Brad Bird (Mission : Impossible – Protocole fantôme, Les Indestructibles et Ratatouille), dont le casting comporte George Clooney et Hugh Laurie. L’intrigue du film, initialement intitulé 1952, est longtemps restée secrète, et se découvre progressivement à travers  une intense campagne de teasing, à laquelle nous participons donc activement par ce billet. Selon ce qui est écrit ici, elle serait fondée sur la découverte à la Foire Internationale de  1964 à New-York d’un monde parallèle par un enfant de 11 ans. Cette  découverte devrait le conduire à y retourner une fois adulte pour sauver le monde réel, programme qui semble celui d’un film américain à gros budget récent sur trois.

When you arrive on the main hall of the Campus, cameras and cranes make you quickly understand that a movie is going to be shot on the place. It is actually the implementation of the decor and the first rehearsal. The actors are not there yet. But it is not immediately obvious that what you have in front of your eyes is actually a movie setting. You need to have seen the « natural » scene in Google Street View to understand that all elements (flowerbeds,  flags …) are brought in purpose to evoke New-York’s Fair. The blue structure in the background is an inflate wall covered with a blue tarpaulin (seen from the back in the photo), probably dedicated to special effects.

But where is the map? It is hung on the wall of the recreated information booth of the Fair and on the side of a a vintage postcards stand. The map in question is a rather anecdotal decorative spatial machinery, a movie prop, although we do not know what will be its role in the story. Does it look like the real map or was it designed specifically for the film? The prop is more colorful and more schematic than the map of that time found on the Internet. But there was perhaps not a single map available to the public visiting the site at the time.

To end this little « cinemap » walk in the Tomorrowland, between Vancouver 2013 and New York 1964, note that there is is another spatial machinery in the landscape that the film attempts to reconstruct : the Unisphere, a spherical steel structure representing Earth, dedicated to the « Man’s Achievements on a Shrinking Globe in an Expanding Universe »  (wikipedia). This 12-storey high sculpture was the landmark of New York’s Fair. It is now in Flushing Meadows.

The Unisphere will obviously reproduced in the film through special effects thanks to the giant blue wall placed at the extremity of the hall. Let see in a new post late 2014 or beginning 2015 the role the Unisphere will play in Tomorrowland’s story.

Quand on arrive sur l’Allée principale du Campus, le matériel du tournage fait rapidement comprendre qu’on assiste au tournage d’un film, en fait à la mise en place du décor et aux premières répétitions. Les acteurs ne sont pas là.

Mais il n’est pas tout de suite évident que ce qu’on a sous les yeux est en fait un décor de cinéma,

Il faut avoir vu les lieux « au naturel » grâce à Google Street View pour comprendre que tous les éléments (fleurs, massifs, drapeaux…) sont rapportés et constituent en fait le décor de la Foire de New-York.

La structure bleue que l’on aperçoit au fond est un mur gonflable couvert d’une bâche (vu de dos dans la photo), certainement destiné aux effets spéciaux.

Mais où se trouve la carte dans tout cela ? Elle est accrochée dans la reconstitution d’un stand d’information de la Foire de New York sponsorisé par les bus Greyound et d’un kiosque à cartes postales d’époque, lui aussi reconstitué.

La carte en question est donc un dispositif spatial plutôt anecdotique à élément de décor semble-t-il, même si l’on ne sait pas encore quel usage en fera la fiction. Est-elle conforme à la carte réelle ou a-t-elle été dessinée spécialement pour le film ? Elle est plus colorée et plus schématique que cette carte de l’époque que l’on trouve sur Internet. Mais il n’y avait peut-être pas qu’une seule carte mise à la disposition du public sur le site.

Pour terminer cette petite promenade cinécartographique dans le pays de demain, entre New-York 1964 et Vancouver 2013, on notera que dans le paysage que le film tente de reconstituer se trouve un autre dispositif spatial, aux proportions plus imposantes : l’Unisphere, une représentation sphérique en acier de la terre, dédiée à la “réussite de l’homme sur une planète qui rétrécit et un univers qui s’élargit” (wikipédia). Cette structure haute de 12 étages était le clou visuel de la Foire de New-York. Elle est toujours sur le site avec d’autres bâtiments et statues dans ce qui est devenu Corona Park dans le Queens, près de Flushing Meadows.

On peut supposer qu’elle sera reproduite dans le film et que le mur bleu géant placé au fond du mail sert à son rendu au moyen d’effets numériques. Quand à savoir le rôle que jouera l’Unisphere dans l’intrigue, rendez-vous fin 2014 ou début 2015, dans un autre billet.
