The war lover is an 1962 American film directed by Philip Leacock. The storie takes place during the Second World War, on an English air base. It focuses on captain Buzz Rickson’s personality (Steve McQueen), pilot of a B-17 called The Body, and his relationship with people and life. With his co-pilot, Lieutenant Ed Bolland (Robert Wagner), and his crew, he has 25 missions to perform, including air raids on Kiel and Leipzig, Germany. It’s in this context that maps and aerial photographs appear in the movie.
L’homme qui aimait la guerre est un film américain réalisé en 1962 par Philip Leacock. L’histoire se déroule pendant la seconde guerre mondiale, sur une base aérienne anglaise. Elle est centrée sur la personnalité du capitaine Buzz Rickson (Steve McQueen) pilote de The Body, un bombardier B-17, et sa relation aux autres et à la vie. Avec le Lieutenant Ed Bolland (Robert Wagner), son copilote, et le reste de son équipage, ils ont 25 missions à réaliser, notamment les bombardements des villes de Kiel et Leipzig, en Allemagne. Maps
In the briefing room where the missions are planned, a map is presented to crews (6th, 78th). This map of the air route is centered on Germany. We can see on location of the IP (Initial Point, the geographic location marking the beginning of the bomb run) and RP (Rally Point, the geographic location marking the re-assembly of a formation after bomb run) (Bowman and Woodall, 1998). Darker stains seem to symbolize urban areas.
Other maps are shown in the movie :
- In Colonel Emet’s office a Northen Europe’s map, centered on Germany, is hung on the wall. There is also what seems to be a plan of the base’s runways (26th and 48th minute);
- Obviously, navigators have maps in planes (17th and 81th minute);
- In the war room, during the bomb run on Leipzig ( 90th minute).
Aerial photographs
The first one is produced to Rickson as a proof of the success of his bomb run on Kiel (31th minute).
The second one is projected on a screen in the briefing room to prepare crews for bomb run on Leipzig ( 78th minute).
Des cartes :
Dans la salle de briefing, en préparation des deux missions, une carte est présentée aux équipages (6e, 78e minutes). Il s’agit d’une carte centrée sur l’Allemagne sur laquelle est reporté l’itinéraire de la mission. Y sont inscrites les initiales IP (pour Initial Point, correspondant l’endroit où commence la mission de bombardement) et RP (pour Rally Point correspondant à l’endroit où la formation doit se reconstituer à l’issue du bombardement) (Bowman and Woodall, 1998). Des tâches plus foncées semblent correspondre aux aires urbaines. Cette même carte, dans la même salle de briefing, réapparaît à la 84e minute lorsque deux officiers estiment l’avancée de la mission sur Leipzig en cours tout en regardant la carte… On note ici le rôle narratif de la carte qui permet de figurer en quelques secondes, le vol vers Leipzig, tout en illustrant l’inquiétude régnant dans la base.
D’autres cartes apparaissent :
- dans le bureau du Colonel Emet qui dispose, accrochée au mur, d’une carte du nord de l’Europe, centrée sur l’Allemagne (26e minute), mais aussi de ce qui semble être un plan des pistes d’envol de la base (26e et 48e minutes) ;
- dans les avions, les navigateurs disposent bien sûr de cartes (17e et 81e minutes).
- dans la salle de commandement, lors de la mission sur Leipzig (90e minute)
Des photographies aériennes :
La première apparaît à la 31e minute.Elle est présentée à Rickson comme preuve de la réussite de sa mission sur Kiel.
La seconde est projetée aux équipages dans la salle de briefing (78e minute) pour préparer la mission sur Leipzig.
