In this third opus of Die Hard series, directed by John McTierman in 1995, John McClane  is in New-York fighting terrorists. Two maps are shown in the movie.

During a  dumper truck chase in Manhattan, McClane arrives to an  underground aqueduct under construction. He find there an information board presenting the project, with a map that indicates the route of the aqueduct and allows the spectator to locate the action. The  truck driver shows the board to McClane and explains that the acqueduct leads to Catskill mountains.

One can read  » stage  3″ on this board while McClane is located  at « Stage 1 ». Moreover, the board mentions Rudolph Giuliani, mayor of New York City from 1994 to 2001, hence when the movie was shot. Finally, one can see the initials « D E P » for (New York City) Department of Environmental Protection.

On the site, a foreman tells McClane that the terrorists have taken the tunnel. McClane asks him if he has a map showing where the tunnel is going. We learn it runs under the Saw Mill River Parkway to a cofferdam. From there the building crew have already brought the water down from the reservoir. Consequently, the only exit is the cofferdam, 20 miles farther. The foreman describes the tunnel on the map and follows the route to the cofferdam with the index.

In reality, this acqueduct is the New York City Water Tunnel No. 3. Construction began in 1970 and its completion is not expected before 2020. The reservoir is the Kesinco reservoir. A map of the project on the DEP website.

Lors d’une poursuite en camions-bennes dans Manhattan, McClane arrive à un aqueduc souterrain en construction. Sur le chantier, on trouve un panneau présentant le projet. Il porte une carte indiquant le parcours de l’aqueduc qui permet au spectateur de localiser l’action. Le chauffeur du camion le montre à McClane en précisant que l’aqueduc va jusqu’aux montagnes Catskill.

Notons que le panneau porte la mention « stage 3 » alors que McClane est au « stage 1 ». Par ailleurs, il mentionne Rudolph Giuliani, maire de New York de 1994 à 2001, donc pendant le tournage du film. Enfin, il porte le sigle DEP pour (New York City) Departement of Environmental Protection.

Sur les lieux, McClane se renseigne auprès d’un contremaître. Apprenant que les terroristes ont emprunté le tunnel, il lui demande s’il possède une carte pour lui expliquer où débouche celui-ci. On apprend alors que le tracé suit la Saw Mill River Parkway pour arriver à un batardeau. L’eau venant déjà du réservoir, la seule sortie se trouve au batardeau, à environ 30 km de là. Le contremaître utilise une carte et fait le descriptif du tunnel, illustrant son discours en suivant du doigt le tracé depuis l’endroit où ils se trouvent (Manhattan) jusqu’au batardeau.

Ce tunnel est dans la réalité le New York City Water Tunnel No. 3, dont les travaux ont commencé en 1970 et dont la fin est prévue pour 2020. Le réservoir mentionné est le Kesinco reservoir. Un descriptif et une carte sont disponibles sur le site du DEP .
