English

Globes are often featured in paintings as symbolic props representing military, political, or religious power. Henri Dargelas’s Le Tour du Monde (~1860) highlights another common use of globes: education. They are a common feature in classrooms—and consequently in the sets of films set there—as well as in paintings. Henri Dargelas’s Le Tour du Monde is original in two ways. First, because the globe is not a prop but the very subject of the painting. Second, because it depicts a very unusual use of a classroom globe.
