Predator is a 1987 movie directed by John McTiernan. In Val Verde, a country bordering Guatemala, a joint task force, led by Major Alan « Dutch » Schaefer (Arnold Schwarzenegger), is assigned to rescue hostages in the jungle. The group is hunted by an extraterrestrial creature: the Predator. Two spatial machineries appear in the movie. One is really original.

Au Val Verde, à la frontière avec le Guatémala, un commando dirigé par le major Alan «Dutch» Schaefer (Arnold Schwarzenegger) est envoyé dans la jungle afin de libérer un groupe d’otages enlevé par la guérilla. Les membres du commando deviennent bientôt les proies d’une créature extraterrestre : le Predator. Deux dispositifs spatiaux apparaissent au cours du film, dont un est on ne peut plus original.

Fictional country

Note first that Val Verde does not actually exists … This is a  fictional country used by Hollywood as a substitute for a Central or a South American country to avoid legal or diplomatic disputes. Using a fictional country is relatively common in work of fictions (cinema, television, literature …). Here is a list.

One or more maps

The commando prepares and accomplishes the mission with maps and aerial photographs. The first one shows the location of the wreckage of the hostages’ helicopter  (3rd minute). We can see a landmark and many annotations. A few minutes later, a soldier consults a map again in the helicopter which carries them to the drop zone (7th minute). There is another landmark on this map which is different from the first one. Perhaps this is another map, or the same map as before but pointing to another place (the drop zone?). Finally, the commando consults one more time a map (which we can’t see) after having taken the guerrillas camp by storm (30th minute).

Given that Val Verde does not exist and because we can see this map closely, it’s interesting to try to find what place it may represent in reality. Among various interesting and discernible indications, we find:

• Indications about Flight Infirmation Regions : BELEM FIR/IUR et RECIFE FIR/IUR. Belém and Recife are two Brazilian towns.
• We can discern two coordinates : 10° and 45°. Perhaps 10° South 45° West … in Brazil ?
• On this map, we can read …DAS MANGADE_RAS. This seems to tally up with Chapada das Mangabeiras … in Brazil. Coordinates don’t match, but we don’t have the exact projection of the map. More, we can see some elevation indications around 2500… feet (?). If it is the right unit, it means around 760 meters. These values are coherent with the Chapada das Mangabeiras’s peak which is 860 meters.

We can be reasonably sure that this map represents a region in the center of Brazil. But as I do not have more precise maps and my knowledge of Brazil geography is not high enough, I cannot improve the location and valid the hypothesis . So any help or comments are welcome !

How to locate a prey when you see the life in red

Yautja (real name for Predator) has a problem whit his eyesight.  He sees the life in red. To compensate for this problem, he wears a mask equipped with an infrared aim which allows him to locate his preys (from the 8th minute). Conversely, these preys have a keen eyesight but the Predator is equipped with a camouflage which makes him practically invisible. The relationships to space from of the  Predator or his preys is then totally artificial.

Un pays fictionnel

On notera que le Val Verde n’existe pas… Il s’agit en effet du pays fictif qu’utilise Hollywood à la place d’un pays d’Amérique centrale ou du Sud, afin de se prémunir de tout litige juridique ou diplomatique. L’utilisation de pays fictifs est relativement courante, que ce soit au cinéma, à la télévision, dans la littérature. Il en existe une liste ici.

Une ou des cartes

Le commando, depuis la préparation de sa mission jusqu’à sa mise en oeuvre, utilise une ou plusieurs cartes (ainsi que des photographies aériennes). La première montre la localisation de l’épave de l’hélicoptère des otages (3ième minute). Cette carte porte un repère et de nombreuses annotations. Quelques minutes plus tard, le commando consulte à nouveau une carte dans l’hélicoptère qui les emmène au point de largage (7ième minute). Cette carte porte elle aussi un repère, différent du premier. Soit il s’agit d’une autre carte, soit c’est la même carte pointant vers un autre lieu (la zone de largage ?). Enfin, le commando consulte encore une carte (sans qu’elle nous soit montrée) après avoir pris d’assaut le camp des guérilleros, afin de s’en extirper (3oième minute).

Étant donné que le Val Verde n’existe pas et puisqu’il nous est donné à voir cette carte de près, il est intéressant de s’attarder sur cette dernière afin d’essayer de trouver qu’elle lieu elle représente réellement. Parmi les indications lisibles et intéressantes, on trouve :

• Des indications en lien avec l’aviation : BELEM FIR/IUR et RECIFE FIR/IUR. La zone est donc à la limite entre 2 FIR (Flight Information Region) : celle de Belém et celle de Recife (deux villes brésiliennes). La zone en question est donc au Brésil.
• On note des indications sur les coordonnées de la zones : 10° et 45°. A supposer qu’il s’agisse de coordonnées géograpiques, ce pourrait être 10° sud et 45° ouest… ce qui nous amène bien au Brésil
• La carte indique clairement …DAS MANGADE_RAS. Cela semble correspondre à la Chapada das Mangabeiras, qui se trouve bien au Brésil, mais qui ne correspond pas vraiment aux coordonnées ci-dessus… dont on ne connait pas la projection. De plus, on note des points côtés autour de 2500…pieds ?… Si cette unité est la bonne, cela ferait autour de 760 mètres ce qui est cohérent avec le point culminant de la Chapada das Mangabeiras qui est de 860 mètres.

Bref, on peut presque sans risque dire que cette carte représente une région au centre du Brésil. Cela dit, ma connaissance de la géographie du Brésil est sommaire et je ne dispose pas de carte suffisamment précise pour parfaire la comparaison. Toute aide ou commentaire seront les bienvenus !

Localiser ses proies quand on voit la vie en rouge :

Le Yautja (vrai nom du Predator) ne semble pas avoir une excellente vue. Pour tout dire, il voit la vie en rouge. Afin de pallier ce problème, il porte un masque équipé d’une visée infrarouge qui lui permet de repérer aisément ses proies (à partir de la 18ième minute). Inversement, celles-ci ont une excellente vue. Cependant, le Predator est équipé d’une système de camouflage qui le rend pratiquement invisible. Le rapport à l’espace du Predator et de ses proies est alors totalement artificiel.
