Fugitive's map / La carte du fugitif

The Hitch-Hiker is a film noir directed in 1953 by Ida Lupino. Two men in a car give a man a lift but the hitch-hiker turns out to be a  psychopath who kidnaps them. The police tracks the criminal.

Le voyage de la peur est un film noir réalisé en 1953 par Ida Lupino. Deux hommes prennent un autostoppeur qui s’avère être un psychopathe et qui les kidnappe. La police les recherche.

The first map is bought by the hitch-hiker who wants to know his position. He does not seem to have skill in map reading since he asks his hostages to do it. This map informs the spectator about their destination: Santa Rosalia in the United Mexican States. It seems important to the psychopath and he never leaves it to his hostages (14th minute).

The police also uses maps for anticipating the route of the fugitive. During a meeting between two police officers, an American and a Mexican, the Mexican infers the  fugitive destination and illustrates his demonstration on a map. In the office, we can see a wall map of the United Mexican States, which is not used by the policemen (34th minute).

In the field, a Mexican policeman uses another map for tracking down fugitive (38th minute).

La première carte est achetée par l’autostoppeur qui souhaite se repérer. La lecture des cartes ne semble pas être sa spécialité puisqu’il demande à ses otages de le faire pour lui. Cette carte nous donne la destination du trio : Santa Rosalia au Mexique. Elle est importante aux yeux du psychopathe et il ne la laisse jamais en possession de ses otages (14ième minute).

La police utilise elle même des cartes afin d’anticiper le parcours du fugitif. Lors d’une entrevue entre un policier américain et un collègue mexicain, ce dernier déduit sa destination probable et appuie sa démonstration sur une carte. Notons qu’une carte murale du Mexique n’est elle pas utilisée (34ième minute).

Sur le terrain, le policier mexicain qui les traque dispose lui-même d’une carte (38ième minute).
